Web design for UK small businesses and trades

We build straightforward, fast websites for people who run real businesses — plumbers, electricians, builders, landscapers, cleaners, shops, salons and independent professionals. The kind of website that makes it easy for a local customer to find you, believe you are worth calling, and then actually call.

You do not need to understand web technology to work with us, and you will never be asked to. Currently based in England and available to work directly with UK businesses.

What We Build

Four situations we see most often

A first website for a business that has never had one

You have been getting by on word of mouth, a Facebook page or a listing on a directory. We give you something you actually own, that shows up when someone searches your name, and that lets a customer contact you without going through a third party.

A replacement for a website that is not working

It looks dated, it is painful on a phone, it loads slowly, or it simply is not producing enquiries. We rebuild it around how customers behave now rather than how they behaved when it was made.

A multi-service site for a growing business

You offer six things and your current site mentions two. We give each service the space it needs, so the person searching for that one specific job finds a page that speaks to it directly.

A site that covers several towns properly

If you work across a region rather than one postcode, the site needs a structure that reflects that honestly — without stuffing a hundred place names into the footer, which does not work and looks like spam.

Who It Is For

Small businesses and trades, not corporate marketing departments

We are not the right choice for a company that needs a bespoke web application or a brand strategy workshop. We are the right choice for someone who is good at their trade, busy doing it, and needs a website that pulls its weight without becoming another job to manage.

Trades and contractors

Plumbers and heating engineers, electricians and EV installers, builders, roofers, landscapers, painters, cleaners and handymen. Work that gets found on a phone, often urgently, and won on whether you look reliable.

Local small businesses

Shops, salons, cafés, consultants, therapists, tutors, garages and independent professionals. Businesses where being easy to find, easy to understand and easy to contact is most of the battle.

What Every Site Includes

The things that actually matter

Built for phones first

Most people looking for a local trade or small business are on a phone, often standing in the room with the problem. Every layout is designed at phone width first and then adapted upward, not squeezed down from a desktop design as an afterthought. Click-to-call sits in the header on every page.

Fast, because slow sites lose people

We build lightweight pages that load quickly on a normal mobile connection, not just on office broadband. No heavy page builders, no dozens of plugins loading scripts you never asked for, no carousel of enormous unoptimised images.

Structured so search engines understand it

Clean semantic HTML, sensible titles and descriptions, an automatically generated sitemap, structured data describing your business, and pages organised around real services and real places. Foundations, honestly described — not a promise about rankings.

Designed to produce enquiries

A website that looks nice but does not generate work has failed. Contact routes appear where someone is most likely to act on them, forms ask only what is needed to give you a useful enquiry, and every page has an obvious next step.

Written for you, in plain English

We write the copy. No jargon, no filler, no paragraphs about being passionate about excellence. Clear descriptions of what you do, who you do it for, and where you do it, in language your customers actually use.

Yours completely

The domain, the content and the site itself belong to you. If you ever want to move to someone else, you take everything with you. We think that is the only honest way to do this.

More detail on how we handle search foundations, and an honest account of what they can and cannot do, is on the SEO-friendly web design page.

The Process

How a project actually runs

Deliberately low-effort on your side. You should be able to keep working while this happens.

01

A short conversation

Ten minutes on the phone or over email. What you do, which towns you cover, what kind of work you want more of, and what you would rather stop doing. This is the only part that needs much time from you.

02

A written quote

A fixed price and a clear description of what you get, agreed before any work begins. If something falls outside it later, we tell you before we do it, not afterwards on an invoice.

03

We build it

We write the copy, source or format the photography, design the pages, set up the contact routes and test it properly on real phone widths. You do not need to supply anything you do not have.

04

You review it privately

You get a private preview link to open on your own phone. Tell us what you like, what you want changed and what is not quite right about how we have described your work. We make the changes.

05

It goes live

We connect your domain, keep your existing business email working, submit the site for indexing and make sure everything resolves properly. Then it is yours.

Already Have a Website?

Replacing a site is a different job from building one

There is more to consider: keeping your domain and business email working, holding on to the pages that already bring in traffic, and redirecting the ones that change so you do not lose what you have built. We handle all of that as part of a redesign.

Pricing

Fixed prices. No hidden costs.

You know what your website costs before any work begins. Every project is quoted as a one-off fixed price agreed in writing — not an hourly rate that creeps, and not a monthly fee you can never stop paying without losing the site.

What Affects The Price

Which package fits you

Mostly it comes down to how many services you offer and how many pages that needs, whether you are targeting one town or a region, and whether you already have photography and content or need us to produce it.

We will also tell you if you do not need what you are asking for. A sole trader who wants a ten-page site usually needs a good five-page one, and we would rather say so than take the larger fee.

After It Launches

We do not disappear

Phone numbers change. You add a service, drop another, or start covering a new town. Send us a message and we will update it — we do not charge inflated fees for small text changes.

Ongoing hosting and maintenance are available if you would rather we looked after everything, but they are optional. Plenty of clients take the site and manage it themselves, and that is a perfectly good outcome.

If you ever want to move to another designer, you take the domain, the content and the site with you. Nothing is held back.

Why True North

What is different about working with us

We say what things are

No jargon, no acronyms, no explanations that leave you nodding along without understanding. If we cannot explain why something is worth doing in a sentence you would repeat to a mate, it probably is not worth doing.

We do not oversell

We will not promise you a number one Google ranking, a specific number of leads, or a transformation of your business. We will tell you what a good website can realistically do, and what it cannot do on its own.

We understand how trade work gets won

A boiler breakdown, an EV charger quote and a patio project are three completely different buying decisions with three different levels of urgency. The website has to reflect that, and most generic templates do not.

You are dealing with the person doing the work

Not an account manager relaying messages to a production team. The person you speak to is the person building your site, which is why the process needs so little from you.

How we structure a website around the way customers search for and hire each trade:

Common Questions

Questions we get asked most

I have never had a website before. Is this going to be complicated?+

No. Most of the people we build for have never owned a website and have no interest in learning how hosting works. You tell us about your business in one short conversation, and we handle the writing, the design, the photographs and the technical setup. The only thing we need from you is a bit of time to review it before it goes live.

What if I do not have good photos or know what to write?+

You do not need to write anything yourself. We write clear, plain-English descriptions of your services, tailored to your trade and the areas you cover. We also supply clean professional photography. If you have phone photos of previous jobs, send them over and we will format them properly for your gallery.

Do I actually own the website, or am I locked into a contract?+

You own the website, the domain and the content outright. We do not hold anything hostage. Ongoing maintenance and hosting support are available if you want us to look after it, but they are optional and you can leave at any time and take everything with you.

How much does a website cost?+

Every project is quoted as a fixed price agreed in writing before any work starts, rather than an hourly rate that drifts. What it costs depends on how many services you offer, how many pages you need and whether you are targeting one town or several. Get in touch and we will give you a straight number, not a range designed to be negotiated upwards.

How long does it take to build?+

It depends on how quickly we can get the details we need from you. The build itself is not usually the slow part — waiting on information, photos and feedback is. We will give you a realistic timescale when we quote, and we will tell you if something is going to take longer than expected.

Will my website show up on Google?+

Every site we build includes proper search foundations: clean page structure, fast loading, sensible titles and descriptions, structured data, and pages organised around your services and service area. What nobody can honestly promise is a specific ranking position or a timescale for it. Anyone who guarantees you the top spot is either guessing or taking risks with your domain.

Can customers call me directly from the website on their phone?+

Yes. Most people looking for a local trade are on a smartphone, often in a hurry. Every site we build has prominent click-to-call buttons so someone can reach you with a single tap rather than hunting for a number.

What if I need to change my phone number or add a service later?+

Send us a message and we will take care of it. We do not charge inflated fees for small text changes, and we do not disappear after launch. If you would rather make small edits yourself, we can set that up too.

Tell us about your business

A short message is enough to start. We will come back with clear options and a fixed price — no jargon and no pressure.

🔒 We respect your privacy. No spam, and no high-pressure sales calls.
